Word Counter FAQ

Is this word counter free?

Yes. Count as much text as you like with no account, no limit and no ads in the way.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything is counted in your browser and your text never leaves your device.

How are words counted?

A word is a run of letters or digits. Contractions like “don’t” and hyphenated words like “well-known” count as one word, and emoji and stray punctuation are not counted.

Does it work for Chinese, Japanese and Korean?

Yes. These languages are written without spaces, so words are found by meaning and the number of characters is shown separately. Reading time for them is based on characters.

How is reading time worked out?

Reading time assumes about 238 words a minute and speaking time about 130 words a minute, the usual pace for silent reading and for a speech or voice-over.

What is the character limit for an X post?

280 characters. A link always counts as 23, and Chinese, Japanese, Korean and emoji characters count as two. The X bar follows those rules.

How long should a meta title and description be?

Aim for about 60 characters for the title and 160 for the description. Search engines cut text by width rather than by count, so treat these as a guide.
