How to generate a strong password

Choose password or passphrase

A password is a string of random characters. A passphrase is several random words, which is easier to type and remember.

Set the length and characters

Pick the length and which kinds of characters to use. Turn on “Leave out look-alikes” if you will read it out or type it by hand.

Copy it

Click Copy next to the one you want, and save it in a password manager. Generate new ones as often as you like.

Password generator FAQ

Is this password generator free?

Yes. Generate as many as you like with no account and no limit.

Is my password sent or stored anywhere?

No. Passwords are generated in your browser and are not sent or stored. Once you close or reload the page they are gone, so copy the one you want into a password manager.

How random is it?

Each character or word is picked with your browser’s built-in secure random number generator, and values are drawn so that none is more likely than another.

What does “bits of entropy” mean?

It measures how many different results the settings can produce: every extra bit doubles the number of guesses an attacker would need. It is an estimate for a password made this way, not a guarantee. It cannot account for a password you reuse, one that is leaked by a website, or one stolen by malware.

How long should a password be?

For accounts you care about, aim for at least 16 random characters or a passphrase of 5 or more words. Length matters more than adding symbols.

Password or passphrase?

Use a random password for anything a password manager fills in. Use a passphrase for what you have to type or remember, such as the manager’s own master password or a device login.

Why leave out look-alike characters?

I, l, 1, |, O, 0 and o are easy to confuse when read aloud or printed. Leaving them out makes the password slightly smaller to guess, so make it a little longer.

Where do the passphrase words come from?

From the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s short wordlist (1,296 words), used under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 licence.

Should I use the same password on several sites?

No. Use a different generated password for every account, so that one leak does not open the others.
