How to play Snake

Pick a mode and speed

Walls ends the game at the edge, wrap-around lets you pass through to the other side, and maze adds obstacles. Faster speeds score more per bite.

Steer to the food

Use the arrow keys, WASD, a swipe on the board or the on-screen buttons. The snake keeps moving, so plan your turns ahead.

Grow and survive

Each bite adds one segment and points. The game ends when you hit a wall, an obstacle or your own body. Fill the whole board to win.

Snake tips for longer runs

Hug the edges early

While the snake is short, travel along the walls and leave the middle open. You will need that room later.

Follow your tail

The cell your tail is leaving is always safe to move into. When you are boxed in, chase your tail until a gap opens.

Sweep in rows

On a long snake, move in back-and-forth rows like mowing a lawn. It keeps the body tidy and the free space in one piece.

Don’t cut the board in two

A body that splits the board leaves food on the wrong side. Avoid long straight lines through the middle.

Use wrap-around carefully

Passing through an edge is a great shortcut, but your body follows. Check the other side before you cross.

Queue your turns

Two quick presses make a tight U-turn: both are kept and run on the next steps, so you never turn back into your neck.

Snake game FAQ

Is this snake game free?

Yes. Play as many games as you like with no account, no ads and no limits.

How do I play on my phone?

Swipe on the board to turn, or use the arrow buttons under it. The page doesn’t scroll while you swipe on the board, and you can keep your finger down and swipe again to chain turns.

What is the difference between the modes?

Walls: touching the edge ends the game. Wrap-around: the snake leaves one side and comes back on the opposite side. Maze: walls plus fixed obstacles in the middle of the board.

How is the score counted?

Each bite scores 1 point at slow speed, 2 at normal, 3 at fast and 5 at turbo. High scores are kept separately for every mode, speed and board size.

Why didn’t my snake turn around?

A snake can’t reverse into its own neck, so pressing the opposite direction is ignored. To turn back, press two turns quickly, for example up then left; both are kept in order.

Can I pause?

Press space or P, or tap Pause. The game also pauses by itself when you switch tabs or windows, and a paused game is saved so you can continue later.

What is the daily challenge?

Each day (UTC) everyone plays the same board with the same food positions, on walls mode at normal speed. Play as often as you like; your best score of the day is kept. Share it with one tap.

Can you win at Snake?

Yes. If the snake fills every free cell of the board, you win. It is easiest to try on the small board.

Are my scores saved?

Your high scores, stats, recent games and a paused game are saved in this browser. Clearing your browser data removes them.
