Base64 FAQ

Is this Base64 tool free?

Yes, with no account and no limits other than a file size of 100 MB.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Encoding and decoding happen in your browser tab, so files and tokens stay on your device.

What is URL-safe Base64?

The same encoding with - and _ in place of + and /, often without = padding, so it can go in URLs, file names and tokens. Decoding accepts both alphabets, with or without padding.

Why is the encoded text larger?

Base64 writes every 3 bytes as 4 characters, so the result is about a third larger than the original.

Which character sets are supported?

Encoding: UTF-8, UTF-16 (both byte orders), ISO-8859-1, Windows-1252 and ASCII. Decoding also reads Shift_JIS, EUC-JP, GB18030, Big5, EUC-KR, Windows-1251 and KOI8-R.

What does the decoder do with files?

It recognises common types from their first bytes (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, SVG, PDF, ZIP, audio, video and fonts), previews images and offers the file for download with the matching extension. Other data is shown as a hex dump.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Anyone can decode it. Use it to carry data through text-only channels, not to hide it.
